Location

Main River Safari's Lodges are located in a remote, pristine valley in the Long Range Mountains on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. We are located in Moose Management Area 3 - an area previously not opened to commercial hunting. The sheer isolation of Main River Safari and the surrounding area means that transportation to and from the lodge is by air only.

The Lodge

The main lodge is fully equipped with modern amenities and capable of accommodating six people in double occupancy rooms. Our lodge is newly constructed with a modern kitchen, dining room, indoor plumbing, separate showers, electricity, HF radios for communication with base and comfortable lounges with wood stoves for that cozy feeling.

Clothing

Temperatures can vary during the fall season from 60F / 5 C during the day to slightly below freezing at night. We suggest light fleece or woolen outer clothing supplemented by thermal underclothing, light rubber marshboots (below the knee with tapered ankle), rain gear, gloves, hat and woolen socks. Blaze orange is not a requirement and camouflage is suggested but not essential.

Binoculars and Cameras

Quality binoculars are important when sizing up your trophy: 7X35 being a good choice. We recommend bringing a camera, preferably a 35 mm with a telephoto lens to capture your hunting experience. Compact camcorders and digital cameras are also very popular.

Rifles

Popular calibers are 30-06, 270, 338, and 7 mm. All have sufficient power and range for our game. Rifles should be sighted for 150 - 200 yards.

In all instances, the hunter furnishes his/her transportation to the point of outfitting which is Deer Lake (the final airport destination). We meet you at the airport on arrival and transport you, your game and trophies to the airport on completion of your fishing/hunting excursion. Our change over day at camp is Sunday and we insist on incoming hunters arriving on Saturday, departing on the following Monday. Charter of float planes, proper care of, and flying trophies and meat from the bush to the nearest cold storage is the responsibility of the outfitter.

Sleeping bag, rifle, ammunition, binoculars, camera, rods, reels and/or fishing gear, personal gear, transportation to and from point of outfitting, cost of meat preparation and transportation of meat and trophies from Deer Lake to final destination.

Our change over day is Sunday. We recommend hunters arrive on Saturday to insure early arrival for transportation to lodge and the departure date should be the following Monday. We can recommend local accommodations before and after the hunting trip if necessary.
